Kulith pithi is a comfort food for most of the Malvani people.English name for kulith is horse gram. In Kokan region kulith is more popular. Powdered kulith is used to make pithla and whole kulith is used to make usal.
Kulith i.e. Horsegram is a miracle superfood. It has a high nutritional value and has various health benefits. Kulith beans are used to make a gravy vegetable. Similarly, in Maharashtra, it’s flour is used to make a gravy of semi solid consistency, called Pithla. The process is almost similar to Besan Pithla. But as horsegram has a distinct flavour, it makes this Pithla delicious in a different way. This is a dish to be relished specifically during winters.
Kulith, also known as Kulthi in Hindi and Horse gram in English derives its English name from the fact that it is one of the staples for horses and cattle. It is a high protein lentil.
